Sad news. It's extraordinary how long a tree can live for, when we can barely muster up a century for ourselves. I visit this tree quite often and it amazes me to think it was stood there, doing its own thing, while the Mona Lisa was being painted, while the Great Fire of London was happening.
The Major Oak is thought to have stood for more than 1,000 years in the heart of Nottinghamshire's Sherwood Forest.
