A hundred years later, the 1926 Census offers a remarkable snapshot of the people who lived and worked at Trinity and the extraordinary stories within our records. Jean’s story is just one of them.

Located in Research Collections, the College Archives also hold rich resources for historical and genealogical research, from Board minutes and student entrance registers to College calendars or “guide books” documenting life at Trinity year by year.
Jean was the author of two published books and was awarded an honorary MA in 1945 prior to her death in 1949.
Students remembered her fondly for decades, whether keeping meals running during shortages, catering for Free State soldiers on campus in 1922, or surviving a gun battle on Moore Street while shopping for fish (the fish, unfortunately, did not make it back to campus).
The records preserved in the College Archives help bring many of these lives back into focus, including that of Jean Montgomery, a former Quartermaster in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during WWI who was the first woman Superintendent of the College from 1919–1949.
On this day in 1926, the census of Trinity College Dublin was certified, capturing campus life from 100 years ago.
There were 185 people living across campus, from students and lecturers to support staff and their families. Among them were 26 “servants”, 17 of them women. @tcddublin.bsky.social
