Inspectors are central to understanding how the system functions in practice, and where possibilities for change might lie.
Focusing only on structural coordination risks overlooking where inspection takes shape: in the everyday practices, interpretations, and negotiations of inspectors.
From overly lenient sanctions to insufficient follow-up on high-risk farms, and a worrying trend of farmers avoiding re-inspection by shifting the premises through which they claim EU subsidies, today’s report by #Rigsrevisionen raises serious concerns about #PigWelfare inspection in #Denmark.
So grateful for the willing participation of inspectors and the support of EURCAW-Pigs. Thanks to the editors and reviewers at JRAI for their insightful feedback that helped to shape this article.
Having studied the work of inspectors in Denmark and across the EU, it’s helpful to bring their perspective into this discussion. Inspectors are often acutely aware of the system’s limits, which can give rise to frustration, disillusionment, and, at times, cynicism.
I am excited to finally share my first publication with Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute #JRAI based on my ongoing research on #AnimalWelfare inspection in the #EU.
