It's summer reading program time, and I'm now at the mercy of a nine year old who keeps reading, "One more chapter".... which would be fine, except I want to go to bed, and she's reading in my bed. 🙃
I could go on, particularly with public health matters. That suspected cancer cluster in the 1960s, because the state failed to clean up a toxic industrial site? You can research that with public records. And so on.
If you live in Massachusetts, now would be a really good time to tell your elected officials that this shouldn't happen. Public records are a key part of a functioning democracy. (The blog post linked above is written by @alecferretti.bsky.social .)
Also, slight Jewish genealogy tidbit: the Hyatt surname that was Jane Yolen's middle name is a common Anglicization of Khaet, which is also written as Chait, among many spellings.
May her memory be a blessing.
Want to research how many kids died in one year of illnesses that we now vaccinate for? You need public records. The same goes for how many women died in childbirth in a given year. Or where your great-grandpa was born. Or the third marriage of that random cousin you never knew you had.
Oh, hi, did you know Massachusetts is trying to restrict access to uncertified vital records, after 400 years of them being public records? And that this greatly impacts genealogists, historians, and public health scientists, among others? #genealogy www.ancestorarchivist.com/government-a...
