There are many differences between us & other animals, but also many commonalities, esp w/ our fellow mammals. I’d wager that lounging in the sun feels just as good to these coyotes as it does to us — esp after a period of rain — & that the qualities & texture of the experience are pretty similar.

Yesterday, while trying to nap in a tall cherry tree, this raccoon was repeatedly dive bombed by screeching scrub jays, likely because he was near their nest. He refused to move, instead maintaining this exact expression and posture, as though daydreaming in a hammock on a lazy summer afternoon.
I call this one, En Garde!

Several years ago, we set up a birdhouse for black-capped chickadees in our backyard. The first residents have moved in! We’ve been watching the parents tirelessly bring food to the nestlings, who occasionally call out like a chorus of impossibly tiny pixie flutes.

For yesterday’s garden party, I made a Strawberry Cake (soft and light, strawberry purée-flavored sponge layered with créme diplomate and fresh strawberries and coated with a tangy strawberry cream cheese frosting) and an Apricot Galette based on a classic Alice Waters recipe 😋
