That is very true about the safety factor, so this is great to hear. Bridget-Michaele Reischl in Green Bay wanted to go a little more daring in her programming than was always practical, but she did recruit Jennifer Higdon as a composer-in-residence!

Julia Tai is amazing. A lot of small community symphonies play it safe, but her programming is incredible: lesser-known classics, premieres and very new pieces, and always at least one work per season by a local composer (helps to have a music department next door). She never phones it in.
