Terrible news. I worked as a visiting lecturer at Hertfordshire in 2021 and am thinking of all the great staff and students I encountered there. Hope the decision is reversed, but it’s depressingly indicative of the direction of travel in British higher education.

Just flown past Saint John, New Brunswick, as distinct from my final destination, St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Atlantic Canadian province in between, Prince Edward Island, was formerly known to Europeans as St. John's Island. Hope that’s clear.

Delighted to learn that my PhD dissertation has received the 2026 Research Prize from the International Society for the Research and Promotion of Wind Music. The book version, Musical Warriors: British Military Music and the Napoleonic Wars, is out early next year with @mcgillqueensup.bsky.social
