So fun to write about seismology+Columbia Glacier for @earthscope.org! Bonus: I got to talk to one of my fave glaciologists, Kurt Cuffey @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social! New research from @uafairbanks.bsky.social connects glacial quakes how Columbia loses ice at its terminus. ⚒️❄️

As Alaska's Columbia Glacier launches icebergs into the sea, seismometers record the action of the ice crashing into the water. Looking at the data over time, you can see how the glacier is retreating. Read about the research ➡️ https://loom.ly/Ti_p0jU

The Cotabato Trench, and perhaps the southernmost Mindanao Fault, may be closer to failure as a result of the magnitude 7.8 mainshock in the Philippines, according to Temblor scientists Ross Stein and Shinji Toda. ⚒️

This article in @temblorinc.bsky.social talks about how swarms along the Cotabato Trench in the Philippines are reminding us that the trench remains a potentially hazardous plate boundary, even though the quakes may not be a preface to a repeat of a major 1976 event. ⚒️
Every so often when I'm interviewing a scientist, they explain something to me in such a clear and illuminating way that I have an internal epiphany. When I put on my science writer hat, my goal is to pass those epiphanies on to y'all ❤️

My latest, for @eos.org! Yes, its about a way to narrow the search for certain critical mineral deposits. But consider this: The paper uses GPlates, built on paleomagnetic data, geochronology, and geodynamics. The lead author studies petrology and geochemistry. Such work needs all of geology ⚒️🧪

80 years ago today, Canadian-born physicist Louis Slotin, 35, received a lethal dose of radiation at Los Alamos Laboratory while performing a very dangerous criticality experiment known as “tickling the dragon’s tail” with a plutonium bomb core. He died from acute radiation syndrome nine days later.

Scientists present a compelling correlation between carbonatites—often host to critical mineral deposits—and sections of Earth’s continents that sit near zones of past subduction. Story by @dralkatrip.bsky.social. eos.org/articles/anc...
