Code reviewed by WIRED uncovered an unreleased face-recognition system embedded in Meta’s smart glasses platform. It’s designed to identify people via biometric data stored on users’ phones.
So why does this still matter? Because unnecessarily complex writing can limit who can access, evaluate, and build on sociological knowledge.
We therefore present a workflow that combines text complexity measures with AI assistance to identify passages that may benefit from revision.
We show that the most demanding passages in sociological articles have become more complex over time. Textual complexity also differs systematically across methodological traditions.
Yet, we find no evidence that complex writing either increases or decreases citation impact.
