In 1996, Nintendo was seemingly very fond of a single particular stock photo of the sky, so that it ended up on the cartridge artwork of three different games released in that year: Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Pilotwings 64.
it's great to see more successful indies putting money forward to fund more games, but games culture or media is never part of that conversation. i know it's messy and culture doesn't NEED money, but people do need to live and squeezed cultural institutions are only slowly catching up
we really need to start recognising the importance of games criticism and games culture.
the video game world can be SO MUCH bigger than just choose: make value video games | review video game value | play value video games.
but capitalist tides have worn away the shorelines of everything else.
