On Sunday 10th May, we will gather in the churchyard of All Saints Church, Ecclesall to lay a wreath on the grave of Henry Clifton Sorby. We will also be exploring the natural history of the churchyard, with a series of guided tours and a mini "bioblitz".
Born in Attercliffe, Henry Clifton Sorby became Sheffield's greatest scientist and naturalist, pioneering many techniques in geological microscopy, metallurgy, marine biology and much more.
As the nation (quite rightly) celebrates the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, we are commemorating the 200th birthday of Henry Clifton Sorby with two special events this weekend.
On Saturday 9th May, Derek Whiteley will lead a walk from Woodbourn, Henry Clifton Sorby's birthplace, to Orgreave, where he lived in later life.
