Does branch excision bias our #photosynthesis data? New paper led by #MarcellaCross shows excision increases water potential but reduces photosynthesis in most species, with trait-dependent effects, so excised branches underestimate intact rates. www.researchgate.net/publication/... #MichaletzLab
NSF LTER program “archived”. LTER=“Long Term Ecological Research”. This program has been incredibly successful, incredibly frugal for what they accomplish, and…of course…targeted by evil know-nothings. My heart is breaking.
Huge #congrats to @juan-camilo-mejia.bsky.social on his first publication, just out in @biotropica.bsky.social! Awesome thermal leaf ecophysiology work done at #STRI with @martijnslot.bsky.social. 🎉 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Abstracts for #Botany2026 🍃 are due on April 13th! If you work on gas exchange (CO2, H2O), carbon dynamics (photo., NSCs), and water relations 💧on organs different from LEAVEs, submit your abstract to the Non-foliar Gas Exchange Colloquium @bsa-ecophys.bsky.social: www.xcdsystem.com/botany/progr...
The 2021 North American #heatwave devastated many species but others thrived. A study in Nature Ecology and Evolution shows more than 75% of species were negatively affected, while heat-tolerant organisms expanded as #ecosystems rapidly shifted. DOI: doi.org/10.1038/s415...
New publication in @biotropica.bsky.social with former lab members @juan-camilo-mejia.bsky.social and Roxana: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.... We found that net photosynthesis and Vcmax were lower at midday than in the morning, but no evidence of significant changes in leaf heat tolerance

PLEASE SHARE. PhD Opportunity with me, Ben Raymond and Jan Engelstaedter and Andrew Letten at University of Queensland. Experimentally testing mechanisms of how temperature may change selection and spread of AMR in E. coli. Coupled with some advanced modelling and sequencing. 🧪🦠 #microsky

“This is going to be the new normal for Western Canada, so even though this heat dome happened five years ago, I think these results we had in this paper are more relevant than ever,” said UBC botanist Dr. Sean Michaletz. @ubcbotany.bsky.social @seanmichaletz.bsky.social bit.ly/4m2PDKx
