Happy Birthday to Wesley Ruggles, born 137 years ago today
Gomez's charity work kept her in Mexico for over a decade, her last film credit being Barquero (1970) with Lee Van Cleef, Warren Oates & Forrest Tucker. I don't think she minded & I'm certain the orphans didn't either.

Marie Gomez (The Professionals) disliked Hollywood & her status as a sex symbol. She turned down big roles that required nudity & spearheaded a project with The Lordβs Lighthouse of Hollywood Presbyterian Church to deliver busloads of food, clothing & toys to Mexican orphans...
Watch a pre-Professionals Marie Gomez* in this 1960 episode of You Bet Your Life π

For example, they used the actual covered wagons that were used to cross the West. I'd only say that a lot of the costumes are more late 19th century than the 1840s, but whatever. This is about as close as it gets:
Arizona (1940) was just uploaded to youtube for free & it's in my top 5 most authentic-looking Westerns of all time. Old Tucson was built for it & no film that's shot there since has looked 1/2 as good. Natives play Natives. Costumes & guns near perfect. Astounding detail:

Wesley Ruggles' 1940 film Arizona has some of the best costumes, production design & sets of any Western.
