I really like this 1996 interview with Artdink's Kazutoshi Iida about experimental game design. There's a lot to unpack. One of my favorite bits is how Tail of the Sun was explicitly designed to be an "Anti-Mario" game that was deliberately "un-fun" to play. shmuplations.com/iidakazutoshi/
