A Guide to Quit Smoking Methods
How do we make sense of Trump's seemingly nonsensical comments on Iran?
I'd say: look to Trump's reverence for The Power of Positive Thinking and its author, Norman Vincent Peale.
Peale, you see, argues that if you believe hard enough that something will happen, you can will it into being. 1/🧵
the real political correctness is that you can’t go on the news and say that this is hick shit
Those of you celebrating the Knicks’ victory in the NBA Championship should enjoy yourselves and leave this one for later.
Basically, Trump isn't just a liar. He's a liar who, by virtue of his socialization into Peale's ideas about manifestation, believes that if he just thinks those lies hard enough, he can--with only the power of his thoughts--make his lies be true. 4/
And unfortunately, Right-wing media (and even some mainstream media) is happy to fuel Trump's Pealean delusion--by publishing Trump's lies as if they are facts, by pretending Trump is actually omnipotent, and by quietly redirecting the conversation every time Trump fails or gets something wrong. 5/
A small number of far right agitators were overwhelmingly surrounded and forced to flee Brighton today after thousands of antifascists assembled in the city.
Fast forward, and Trump finds himself in a situation where he very much needs the Iran war to end (even though he started it). But rather than actually do anything to end it, he's just leaning on his Pealean training and clinging to the idea that if he says it enough, it will be. 3/
Trump, meanwhile, attended Peale's church as a child--Peale even officiated Trump's first marriage-- and both Trump and Trump's father were big fans of Peale's The Power of Positive Thinking. 2/
