Oh. My. Word. WE HAVE DONE IT! 🥳🎉
In 2020 we worked with Natural England to carry out a green hay transfer from Sandybeck Meadow SSSI & SAC onto the Loweswater meadows, with an ultimate target being to get Greater Butterfly Orchid established.
Today, was the day I found the first one!!
Beautiful Early Marsh-orchids, Dactylorhoza incarnata, in all their glory in Upper Teesdale this afternoon.
Just perfect for this week's #WildFlowerHour #OrchidChallenge
Many of our hedgerow-verges are laden with Water Avens, Geum rivale in this part of the #LakeDistrict, which are just coming into flower now.
Here it is on our own little stretch of verge!

Near-threatened in Britain (<15 sites), so buzzing to find bird’s-foot sedge (Carex ornithopoda) on this limestone pavement in Cumbria!
These pavements take 1000s of years to form as rain cuts deep cracks, creating niches for rare wildlife - this sedge being one of them 😍🌱
