I love this illustration and the sentiment on diversity by the wonderfully talented Dr. @dorotdesigns.bsky.social! 🌈❤️🐌

I’m used to saying ”male” or ”female” flowers, or calling anthers the male part and pistil the female part of a flower. But accurate scientific vocabulary is so important! I agree with the argument that plants are much more complex than the binary categories we borrow from human perspective
To celebrate Pride Month, here's an iconic queer snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Defying binary classifications, females produce offspring with or without males doi.org/10.1890%2F00... #PrideMonth #scientificillustration

There are different kinds of males, too - some of them are sons of asexual females (doi.org/10.1038/hdy....) 🏳️‍🌈Science gets better when we appreciate the diversity and complexity of nature

There’s a bigger idea here, too. The categories humans use to organize nature are never neutral and never complete. They reflect who we are and how we see the world. And when we forget that, we risk mistaking our map for the territory
Plants have been reproducing their own way for hundreds of millions of years. So why do we keep describing them in human terms? Thread 👇 #Evolution #PrideMonth #LGBTQ #EvoKE #EduSky 🧪
🧠 “Isn’t homosexuality an evolutionary disadvantage because it doesn’t directly produce offspring?” The simple answer is: No. At first glance, that seems logical. But evolution is rarely that simple (thread 👇) #Evolution #PrideMonth #LGBTQ #EvoKE 🧪
