The Hoosiers seized a 53โ€“52 win in the first-ever post-season meeting between the longtime rivals. A 20โ€foot jump shot by Butch Carter with 4 seconds left enabled Indiana to beat Purdue. Boilermakers senior Jerry Sichting missed an open baseline jumper on the ensuing inbounds play. Carter's basket earned him a share of the MVP honors with his IU teammate, Ray Tolbert. First played in 1938, the NIT was once considered the most prestigious post-season showcase for college basketball before its status was superseded in the mid-1950s by the NCAA Tournament.๐Ÿ€ #MarchMadness | Davenport Sports Network
