Nonetheless, the Cathach remains the oldest extant Irish manuscript of the Psalter and may be the earliest example of the form of Irish writing known as insular majuscule script. It is on display at the @ria.ie Library the last Friday of every month.
The MS of the Week is on display in the Reading Room of the Library this week from 10.00-16.30, Monday-Friday. No appointment or reader’s ticket is required to view the MS of the Week.

Today is the feast day of St Columba (Colum Cille), who according to tradition, wrote the Cathach (RIA MS 12 R 33) as a copy of a Latin psalter belonging to St Finnian in a single night. A dispute arose about the ownership of the copy leading to the battle of CĂșl Dreimne in AD 561.
