Jazz OTD: The excellent singer Maucha Adnet, one of many guests, performs on this gorgeous closing track for pianist/arranger Renee Rosnes's album "Crossing Paths," recorded June 17-18, 2024. This pensive, lyrical, but concise tribute to Brazilian jazz is a lovely and rewarding listen. #jazzsky
The mistake: Not calling them flapjacks
The easy fix: Call them flapjacks
Jazz OTD: The legendary pianist Hank Jones joined veteran trombone player Steve Davis for a lovely ballad-focused session on June 17, 2008, and released 15 years later as "Steve Davis Meets Hank Jones, Vol. 1." The reliably excellent Peter Washington is on bass. #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: The late pianist John Hicks, a personal favorite for his immense sensitivity and versatility, recorded a wonderful collection of Billy Strayhorn tunes (including, like here, his Duke Ellington collaborations) on June 17, 1997. With Dwayne Dolphin (b) and Cecil Brooks III (d). #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Here's the immensely appealing opening track for trumpet/flugelhorn great Alex Sipiagin's comparatively restrained "Mirages," recorded June 17, 2008, as always with a great band. This time, it's Seamus Blake (ts), Mulgrew Miller (p), Boris Kozlov (b), and Johnathan Blake (d). #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Miles Davis was in full electric mode in his June 17, 1970 show at New York's Fillmore East, with a long edit of part of his set appearing first on "Miles Davis at the Fillmore" later that year and then a subsequent and longer "Bootleg" edition in 2014. Still intense and amazing. #Jazzsky
Jazz OTD: I don't have individual track dates, but the brilliant, tireless pianist/composer Orrin Evans led his "Captain Black Big Band" for a couple of dates in his native Philadelphia on June 17 and July 20, 2016, leading to their excellent and thoroughly entertaining album "Presence." #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Bridgeport, CT native Mike LeDonne held his lively quintet album "Waltz for an Urbanite" on June 17, 1995 with the great Steve Nelson (vb), Peter Bernstein (g), Peter Washington (b), and Kenny Washington (d). Advanced harmonics and a wonderful swing feel. #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Saxophonist Vincent Herring put his gorgeous sound and impeccable feel to great use on "The Days of Wine and Roses," a charming set of standards. Recorded June 17-18, 1994, with, on this Jimmy Van Heusen tune, Cyrus Chestnut (p), Jesse Yusef Murphy (b), and Billy Drummond (d). #jazzsky
