An idle thought - the extreme harmfulness of algorithmic social media optimized for watch time is now being recognized; what retrospective light does that throw on the argument that the media had no role in shaping politics because they only published things which their readers wanted to read?

There is essentially no difference here between what Carns is arguing and what Johnny Mercer used to argue: that British troops and the British state did basically nothing wrong in Northern Ireland, and the idea that any British soldier should face consequences for what they did there is outrageous.
