Has @elsevierconnect.bsky.social hit a new low? I just recieved a demanding email imforming me that my review was a negative three days late ... three days before the deadline for my review. This is honestly not ok.
Horn combined scientific excellence with moral clarity - his tiger beetle taxonomy still largely stands, and he never yielded to fascism.

Neat new publication in @jappliedecology.bsky.social linking conservation and pest control / food safety - I really enjoyed handling this one!

At the start of the year I hit 2,000 species on @inaturalist.bsky.social and set myself the goal of adding 1,000 more this year. I finish the year with 1,600 new species recorded. Enormous thanks to the 635 identifiers who helped along the way! š #iNaturalist #Biodiversity
It was a pleasure to serve as opponent in the PhD defence of @alfredoventuro.bsky.social at the Czech University of Life Sciences (CZU) last week. Excellent work on the long-term and off-season effects of wildflower strips on biodiversity. Well deserved ā congratulations, Dr Venturo!
Meet #Licinus cassideus ā a beetle that hunts snails, loves sun-scorched calcareous grasslands, and hadn't been seen in #Unterfranken since 1955. After being undetected for 71 years, we found it again in its typical habitat. #Carabidae #beetles #biodiversity #fieldwork @ecoresearchzoo3.bsky.social

We show that falcons attracted to orchards using nestboxes reduce food safety risks and crop damage from wild birds.

The notice, published today, applies to a 2020 meta-analysis measuring population patterns of freshwater and terrestrial insects and predicting what might drive changes in population numbers.

In the absence of American kestrels, there are more birds in orchards. This leads to increased crop damage and more bird faecal contamination.
