“You can’t get to the clinic without the basic scientific discoveries, the fundamental knowledge of how biology works, sometimes in very surprising, unexpected ways. This is what leads to transformative or even revolutionary advances in human health.”
Lovely Q&A with Iain Drummond at @mdibl.org 🐟
Waiting for lots of apologies from people who got enraged when you suggested abundance was what it obviously was
What if damaged human kidneys could one day repair themselves? At MDI Bio Lab, Iain Drummond, Ph.D., and his team have identified inflammatory signaling pathways in #zebrafish capable of triggering the production of new, functional nephrons without injuring the kidney itself. 🧪 🐟🎸 #NephSky #RenalSky
One point I think deserves more attention: In addition to worrying about grants cut or never funded based on ideology, we probably also ought to worry about outside groups (like, @shobitap.org points out in my piece, big tech) gaining influence over research priorities and individual grants.

Jeremy Wang developed rammap, a minimap2 rewrite in Rust. It achieves comparable or better performance than minimap2 and produces identical output to minimap2. During rewrite, Jeremy found two long-existing bugs in minimap2 which are fixed in v2.31. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

~15 years after we published the first chelonian genome (Chrysemys picta), I'm going back to my turtle roots! We now have an excellent assembly, annotation, & evo-history study for the spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata), led by the amazing @cheloevo.bsky.social, out in JOH: doi.org/10.1093/jher...
