Ex-SciComms guy Chris here, chronicling Mount St. Helens' history: the mountain before 1980, its eruptive fury, and nature's stunning comeback.

June 13, 1980 | Eruption #3: Aftermath
"Again, Mount St. Helens."
Frank Reynolds opened this evening's ABC World News Tonight, perhaps recognizing the waning novelty of the volcano's fury.
Planes, cars, and the roses in the Rose City were coated in dampened ash. Few bothered with masks.

Arguably my favorite video from last year.
Super sky point, as always, to Big Red.

Aftermath of the third eruption. Mount St. Helens has returned to quiet.
In speaking with reporters after the event, USGS geologist Pete Rowley downplayed any role of tidal forces or Friday the 13th.

#MSH45 | June 12/13, 1980 | "We Interrupt..."
Near midnight in Chicagoland.
Putting the day to bed, you settle on a rerun of Charlie's Angels on WLS Channel 7. Why not?

This one was texted to me. Never saw it before last month. Out of the blue. At the 80's Forest Service temporary visitor center — my wife's grandfather.
Pretty cool, Bruno.
46 years ago, Eruption #3.
Flying around Mt. St. Helens. I don't think enough people realize that the lakes here are *still* filled with dead trees from the explosion 46 years ago. Stuff's just got nowhere to go!

St. Helens does it again—once again while hidden.
Harmonic tremor rose through the afternoon—just like before the May 25 eruption. A spike around 7 p.m. was followed by a column of ash.
Then, another surge at 9. A 50,000-foot plume launches into the night.

The Grateful Dead play Portland.
Mount St. Helens erupts as “Fire on the Mountain” gets underway.
In the crowd: legendary Deadhead Bill Walton.
By morning, he’s got a plan—and a fake credential.
What follows?
Peak Walton, in his own words.
