I share the same views about standups!
I would also add that it depends on whether the team is fully remote or not. In some cases, standups are good to get face time with people even if maybe there are no relevant updates to share

My approach, as an EM had been:
1. Leave it up to more experienced teams to decide if/how they want to share updates.
2. Have the team share updates with stakeholders (incl me). Doesn't have to be a meeting.
3. Lay out a more opinionated structure for less experienced teams.
