While John Dickson Carr is most associated with impossible crimes, he was also a writer of historical mysteries. These were big, ambitious adventure stories with larger than usual page counts - a problem for his publisher in a time of national paper shortages. This was also a problem for this reader who struggled to make his way through The Bride of Newgate when I read it a few years ago. Happily, Captain Cut-Throat is shorter, tighter, and actually contains a coherent mystery plot.
