Seishi Yokomizo's The Village of Eight Graves is often compared with Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. Though they are quite different stories, there are certainly commonalities. A rural, isolated setting. An appealing outsider who finds themselves pulled into local intrigues which put their own lives in danger. And a curious and bloody local history that informs the modern day crimes...
