Markdown plus 11ty is a solid foundation. Moving to ESM and rewriting the CSS with modern features sounds like the right scope - you get the tooling benefits without having to rethink the whole content model.
All my posts are in markdown (luckily) so I’m porting them over to using 11ty and the JS all to native ESM. I’m keeping the design of the site, but the CSS is basically all redone to use modern features.
