Did you know male #Barbary #macaques will carry infants from the group? Males show high rates of #infant #handling compared to other primates, and will even carry young, unweaned infants around.

New data science activity!

#Chimpanzees can show major sex differences: males are typically more aggressive, obtain higher status, and are more sociable than females
Recent work by Margaret Bryer, @kris-sabbi.bsky.social @zeppypearl.bsky.social @alexrosati.bsky.social & others shows that these differences can be #flexible!
Greater bamboo lemurs (Prolemur simus) were thought extinct in the mid-1900s. Rediscovered in southeastern Madagascar in the 1960s and '70s. Bamboo serves as their primary source of food. Threatened by habitat loss due to agriculture, climate change, and hunting. Critically Endangered.
Collared brown lemurs (Eulemur collaris) are endemic to southeastern Madagascar. Cathemeral, they are active both day and night throughout the year. Their activity is strongly influenced by nocturnal luminosity. Threatened by habitat destruction and hunting. Listed as Endangered.
Zanzibar red colobuses (Piliocolobus kirkii), also called Kirk's red colobus monkeys, are endemic to islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago. They supplement their leafy diets with charcoal to soothe their digestive systems. Threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Endangered and Critically Depleted.
Primates like these #Barbary #macaques at Trentham Monkey Forest love to #groom!
We are excited to be back to start some new research examining how these monkeys think and make social decisions.
