Backstoroes qhen done right help give context for present day events, flashbacks visually convey info for the audience to have that some characters dont save for the POV of the character whose backstory we're exploring.
Even naruto, as stuffed as it is with flashbacks, all served a purpose

it drives me crazy when fans are like "we don't need more backstories. the important part is their story in the present ☺️" & i'm thinking "no FUCK YOU, you don't get to pull up ladder just because YOUR favorite got a backstory already".
