3. Dated to the 2nd–3rd century CE, the decoration reflects Palmyra’s cultural syncretism, where local traditions merged with Greco-Roman visual language. Beyond technique, the scene symbolizes the soul’s ascent. Ganymede’s apotheosis is a metaphor of immortality. #ancientbluesky 🏺
2. The painting reveals a sophisticated material palette: Egyptian blue for the background, green earth (likely celadonite) for the hexagonal frame, and iron oxides (goethite, ochre) for the floral details. Gypsum plaster and carbonate additives show a carefully engineered wall-painting system 🏺
My Mother's portrait sketched by my Grandmother many years ago. Somehow I feel very sentimental about it ☺️
Just a short visit at Warsaw's Faculty of Archaeology ☺️ Novelties!
1. The fresco of Ganymede's abduction in the Tomb of the Three Brothers in #Palmyra. Placed in a central medallion on a barrel-vaulted ceiling, it depicts the myth of Ganymede carried off by Zeus’ eagle, a Greco-Roman motif linked to divine selection and immortality. #AncientBluesky 🏺

🔸 One reason I’m fascinated by ancient Rome is its culture of memory. Portraits, genealogy, and rituals connected the living with the dead and gave people a sense of continuity. Perhaps that is why we write: not to defeat time, but to enter into a conversation with it 🔸
