Historian Gordon Wood died yesterday at the age of 92 after being struck by a motorist in Providence, Rhode Island. The tributes are rolling in, but Baylor University historian Robert Elder's Gordon Wood story is going to be hard to top. Here is what Elder wrote yesterday on X: I never met Gordon Wood, but I have a story about him. In one of my grad school seminars, we read Wood’s Creation of the American Republic. The sheer erudition and evidentiary depth of the book bowled me over.

A giant of the historical profession has died. Here is GO LOCAL PROVIDENCE: On Sunday, one of Rhode Island’s most accomplished writers and historians, Gordon Wood, was hit and killed by a motorist. He was 92. Wood won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize. Wood was one of America’s most accomplished scholars on the American Revolution — he won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for History for his work The Radicalism of the American Revolution. In 2010, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal. He was the Alva O. Way University Professor and Professor of History Emeritus at Brown University.
