Age verification and social media bans aren't a silver bullet for kids’ online safety - they just create more risk for kids and adults while taking decision-making power away from families where it belongs, EFF’s @mollibroccoli.bsky.social told @sfchronicle.com.

Hey seriously, literally in the bills it says they'll also use identifying information, such as your age data for "other purposes". That means your data goes into a government surveillance database. This would be for ANY *OS*, which is the thing your fucking PC runs off of. Call your reps NOW.

the bill is 'H.R.8250' while usually i'd take a "wait and see" approach to a bill that has only been introduced, the us govt is moving FAST wrt age verification, so please, contact your representatives (particularly the house) and advocate against AV on device laws www.congress.gov/members/find...
Please contact your reps and demand they oppose the GUARD Act www.congress.gov/members/find...

We've covered here before on individual US states setting up their own age verification laws, and now a new US Congress bill has been proposed for it.

Look at dis and contact ya reps about how bad this is if it helps Kosa passing would mean almost every site online especially social media and YouTube or such will need ID verification and it won't be optional x.com/i/status/206...

Congress is moving quickly on the revised GUARD Act. The bill still requires intrusive age-verification and has massive penalties under vague standards. Tell Congress to oppose it: act.eff.org/action/tell...

Congress is moving quickly on the revised GUARD Act, S. 3062. While lawmakers narrowed the bill after widespread criticism, it still requires intrusive age-verification systems for AI companions and imposes steep penalties on developers offering conversational AI tools.
