Happy birthday, Gustave Courbet. Known for defying authority and holding strong opinions, Courbet received equal praise and criticism for his work. He didn't embellish or romanticize like many French artists but preferred to depict reality as it was.

His passion for earthy realism, shown by his subjects (e.g. laborers) and materials, positioned him as a leader of the new school of Realism. His drawings of women shocked critics, who were accustomed to less earthy depictions of the female form.
No stranger to controversy, Courbet publicly refused the Legion of Honor in 1870 and declared his independence from any form of government. His political views were as famous as his art, and he spent his final years in exile in Switzerland. gty.art/4uXbAhz
