feels like much of the past decade has left us unprepared for this moment and its too bad because the "discourse" is really suffering for it.
i mean i'm not trying to say i've got much better to say either, but at least i haven't opened my dumb mouth about it until now.
the obsessive focus on "electric minds" in media like black mirror is another example of the former (a bummer bc that show was sort of fun when it had more ideas)
+ the focus on debunking "free will" (prob an incoherent idea to begin with) by people like robert sapolsky is an example of the latter
oh and to be clear this isn’t meant as a shot against the article, 404 rules (aoe2 does also), I’m saying I feel their frustration.

it feels like our ability to think about LLMs is under attack from two directions: weird, science-tinted mysticism & panpsychism like the free energy principle on one hand, and coy "LLMs aren't concious because you aren't either" crowd on the other.
