So very proud to see this posted. This group has worked tirelessly to compile the data - Sustained Specific EBOV GP Immunogenicity Five-Years Post-Vaccination: Longitudinal Results from North Kivu and Equateur, Democratic Republic of the Congo www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6...

I went to Eastern DRC with @drtedros.who.int during the 2019 Ebola outbreak. There were attacks. Health workers died. I called that story The Ebola Wars. The current outbreak will almost certainly be much worse. My heart goes out to millions of Congolese who have been neglected for so long.

Ugh, this is bad. “The apparent scale of the outbreak makes a response harder, given the number of contacts that need to be traced and tests that need to be run, says Jason Kindrachuk, a virologist at the University of Manitoba…. “It's a heck of a lot of cases to be under the radar,” Rimoin says.”
Much of the global mortality remains invisible. Of the estimated 61 million deaths worldwide in 2023: - Only around 21 million were reported to WHO with cause-of-death information. - And just 12 million reported deaths included sufficient data for public health analysis.

The WHO Director-General has just declared Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This is the first time a PHEIC has been declared without an Emergency Committee first. Very surprising procedurally but makes sense for public health given size, spread & WHA

In light of the ongoing situation with Ebola in the DRC, I'm sorry to have to remind you that evolutionary biology makes it abundantly clear that ignoring a catastrophic disease outbreak because it's there, not here, is a terrible, terrible idea.

Using a commercially available H5 serology assay, we identified a 7.4% (n=5/68) anti-H5 seroreactivity rate among hunters in Northern Canada. All participants reported close contact with wild birds. ...
