Interesting thread - also, I did not know that Mercado wrote a book on topic(s). Re female song: as Nicole Creanza said in here recent @ces2026.bsky.social talk: female *bird* singing happens often, too (is simply underresearched).

However, Mercado does a great job of explaining why the evidence doesn’t support it. Sometimes female humpback whale sing, and there’s observations of singing among foraging humpbacks. (5/12)
