Starting near the Lincoln Statue by the Concert Grove Pavilion, we walked through Prospect Park documenting things that belong on Wikimedia Commons — the free image library that illustrates Wikipedia for readers worldwide.
We started with a picnic and a quick intro to @wikipedia.org and Wikimedia Commons. Then we handed the cameras over to the Girl Scouts and went for a walk through Prospect Park to take photos of things that should be accessible to everyone.
A huge thank you to Amira from @pausetake9.bsky.social for joining us and handing out swag. Be sure to check out their Count Before You Click campaign, also supported by @craignewmark.bsky.social! bsky.app/profile/paus...
🧵 With the support of @craignewmark.bsky.social, we recently hosted a fun WikiTakesPhotos at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, bringing together Girl Scouts of Greater New York and @pausetake9.bsky.social for an afternoon of free knowledge, photography & pizza 🤓 📸 🍕
🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️ 💜 💛 🤍 🩵 NYC Wikipedians! Come help grow LGBTQ+ content on Wikipedia this Pride Month. We're hosting a community gathering on June 24, 6–9pm in NYC as part of Wiki Loves Pride 2026 — a global campaign running June through August. ✋Don’t click. Count! Pause and take 9️⃣ seconds before you click, download, or share. Learn more at https://pausetake9.org/
After the event, we sent everyone home with instructions on uploading their photos to Wikimedia Commons. These Girl Scouts will make real contributions on one of the most-visited websites in the world.
We made a stop at the historic Lefferts House, where curators gave us a tour and walked us through the history of what had once been a 300-acre plantation that relied on the forced labor of enslaved Africans.
Whether you've edited Wikipedia before or never tried, this is a good entry point. Show up June 24. Help fill gaps in LGBT+ history and representation on the world's largest encyclopedia. Join us June 24, 6–9pm in NYC at Prime Produce! Register → en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/June_2026
Wiki Loves Pride is organized by Wikimedia LGBT+ and runs across Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. This year there are events in Cardiff, Paris, Bogotá, Madrid, Lagos, and more — and NYC is on the map too.
