She asked when it was banned in schools and I said just have been mid-80s cause I remember the strap in primary school. Looked it up. 1987 is state schools and 1999 in private schools.

Also - did you know that in England, you aren’t allowed to smack a child if you work in a school or nursery, but parents can give permission for informal carers such as childminders or nannies to smack their child. WTF.
My daughter trained in early childhood education here in Germany and she was absolutely flabbergasted to hear that it’s still legal to smack your child in England.
When I said it was allowed if it was seen to be a ‘reasonable punishment’, she was speechless.
