... Despite frequent claims of bias in public service institutions, we still know surprisingly little about the extent to which European citizens believe that these institutions are politically biased ... (2/3)
👉 The “enraged” mechanism (where politically dissatisfied citizens favor DIs) is stronger in poorer regions, likely reflecting a desire to make the system more responsive to their needs.
... We show that citizens' perceptions of bias are widespread in 🇩🇪, 🇳🇱, 🇬🇧, 🇵🇱 and 🇪🇸. Most notably, we find that the direction of perceived bias mirrors one’s own ideological position. Left- and right-leaning citizens tend to associate institutional actors with the opposite (‘hostile’) ideology. (3/3)
