My plan was to get an MA in linguistics and become a high school teacher. I wrote my master’s thesis in American studies on evangelical feminist literature and shifted to James Dobson for my PhD.
I had a gap year in China before doing my MA. I sometimes went to a cafe run by American missionaries to get lunch and to buy bread and cheese. While eating my lunch one day, I started reading their magazines. That sparked my interest in evangelical print culture and “family values.”
