Europe’s economy must stay within planetary, coastal, and ocean boundaries. The time to act is now!
And yet, the European Commission’s own report reveals a gap: Member States are unevenly integrating ecosystems and land-sea interactions into their plans. Too often, these principles remain words on paper, not action. ⚠️
One day. Two reports. At first glance, they're unrelated, but the connection is undeniable.
Retrace! collections aren’t just about removing waste from the environment—they’re about turning that waste into robust scientific evidence to push policymakers and industries to take action at the highest level! The second? The European State of the Climate (ESOTC) 2025 by Copernicus.
The findings are stark:
🌡️ Record-high sea surface temperatures for the fourth year in a row
🌊 86% of Europe’s Ocean region faced at least one day of strong marine heatwaves
💧 Sea levels rising at 3.8 mm/year and accelerating
Read the report ➡️
The first? A look at how EU Member States are planning their maritime areas. Back in 2014, the EU adopted legislation requiring countries to manage sea uses sustainably, requiring them to take ecosystems, their dynamics and land sea interactions into consideration when doing so.
At a time when every new report sounds the alarm on the state of EU’s seas, oceans, rivers, and coasts, Surfrider calls on the European Commission to strengthen the MSP Directive. It must prioritize good environmental status for our seas. Otherwise, the upcoming Ocean Act risks missing its mark. 🔴
On the occasion of #WorldNoTobaccoDay, Surfrider Foundation Europe is calling for a Europe-wide ban on:
❌ cigarette filters
❌ nicotine pouches
❌ disposable electronic cigarettes
