The name "Caterpillar" was coined in 1905 when Charlie Clements was photographing one of Benjamin Holt's early steam tractors in a Stockton, Ca. field. Watching the tractor's undulating continuous tracks moving over soft earth, Clements exclaimed that the machine crawled like a giant "Caterpillar".
