In the US, 86% of people say politicians are more focused on fighting each other than solving problems. When asked what's wrong with the system, "polarisation" is the single most popular answer. People see it. They hate it. But it persists.
How does polarisation get in the way of climate action? In polarised countries like the US and Australia, extreme weather barely moves climate concern — because accepting the science feels like switching sides. Division is literally making it harder for people to face reality.

Why does it persist? Because extreme voices dominate. Research shows outrage travels faster than common ground. 61% of Americans find talking politics stressful — so the reasonable majority goes quiet, and the loudest voices continue dominating public conversations.
Climate chaos accelerates conflict, and local and global conflict get in the way of finding a shared way forward on climate. Yet we rarely speak about these crises together.
