Buffalo Soldiers—the segregated all-Black regiments of the U.S. Army formed in 1866—were primarily deployed to the western frontier to enforce U.S. federal policies. Their actions directly contributed to the displacement, confinement, and subjugation of Native American tribes during the Indian Wars.
