You're not imagining it: some people DO project all their negative qualities, bad behaviour and nefarious intentions onto you - because they can't stand looking at them in themselves. It MUST, in their minds, be your fault. You don't really exist to them. You're just a mirror.
Beware of those insistent on reading nefarious purpose into things you say, instead of taking you at your word when you explain your intents. Especially when they start blaming you for things other people said. They're telling on themselves and the impossible amount of control they need to feel ok
If it's okay when they do it, but not okay when you do it... it's REALLY not okay when they do it.
If someone doesn't care about your feelings or safety, it's better if you don't give a damn about their opinions of you.
