The Philippines experiences some of the world's most frequent seismic activity, recording over 40 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater in the past 5 years. The 7.8 earthquake that struck off Mindanao this week was the largest in this period, surpassing the previous high of 7.6 from December 2023.
