Trump moaned about DEI, then Reform took it up, and now the mainstream media is doing it. It’s obvious from the very language they’re using that being “anti-DEI” is an idea imported from the US and parroted by people who don’t know or care what our equality laws and best practice even are.
I usually try to keep my politics offline but this is such an important point which the media and politicians seem to be ignoring - public servants are SUPPOSED to consider people’s differences in order to ensure everyone gets equality of outcome. 🧵
But no-one will want to hear this. The right-wing are screaming, the media has jumped on the bandwagon and a generation’s work of careful progress in EDI is going to be thrown under the bus. They’re even forgetting that it’s called EDI. +
The right wing has been quoting Hampshire Police’s website in outrage because it tells officers that equity doesn’t mean treating everyone the same. Anyone completing the first 5 minutes of bog-standard diversity training e-learning knows that! +

This isn’t to excuse the behaviour of the officers. The bodycam footage is sickening. But I very much doubt their behaviour can be traced back to their love of the force’s EDI policy. I think they’re normal coppers acting like they always do when faced with a suspect. Which to me is worse. +
