If the anti-car crowd hadn't fought the losing cause of boycotting cars altogether, but instead had thought more about how to compensate for the long-term negative effects they bring, we might not live today in cities drowned in car noise and exhaust. While still reaping their benefits.
When the car was invented, there was just no way it wouldn't eventually replace horses. We evolved to be animals that use tools to make our lives more comfortable. We just can't help it, it's literally in our DNA. But we also have brains that can project into the future.
