Now out in Nature Neuroscience: "Fixation duration on natural scenes is explained by memory encoding not processing demand".
www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Our eyes don't linger because recognition is hard; they linger to remember. Let me take you on a quick tour. 🧵
By combining magnetoencephalography and eye tracking, this study sheds light on why people fixate on some parts of natural scenes longer than others. Rather than visual complexity, fixation durations ...
Place cells respond to terrain geometry. Explicable as a generalisation of the BVC model.

This is the kind of discovery which, I admit, makes me slightly miss my old job.

Place cells map terrain geometry, not behavior, revealing a surface-based brain code for real-world navigation.

Ever wonder how your brain navigates the real world? 🧠
Most spatial navigation studies use flat, 2D mazes.
But the real world is hilly, irregular, and bumpy! ⛰️
Our new paper in #ScienceAdvances asked a simple question: How does the brain map uneven terrain?

Finally, footage from that new whale graveyard.
The fact that fossils and fresh carcasses mix together in this spot is bonkers. But of course it makes sense, because the scavengers that live down there also need a steady supply over millions of years. They can't just suddenly adapt to the deep.

I’ve never heard of this new NASDAQ rule before. But yeah, this sounds like it’s gonna get ugly fast.

Finally reading @anilseth.bsky.social’s book ‘Being You’ so I can be mad about his theory of perception (it’s a living 🤷♂️). Just saw this sentence about dreams, though, and I feel like it’s wrong; I experience dreams when I wake up, not when they’re happening 🤔 Thoughts?
